Community spirited pupils at St Michael’s School had a trip to the beach on Saturday – but rather than build sandcastles they picked up litter.

The clean up of Church Cove, at Gunwalloe, was organised by year one teacher Suzanne Bray in response to Surfers Against Sewage promoting beach cleans across Cornwall in latter October.

As Church Cove is a National Trust beach, Laura Bailey from the Trust supported the event, both in picking up litter and providing equipment in the form of bags and bag holders, gloves and litter pickers.

A good sized group of pupils from the Helston Primary School, together with their parents, took part in the clear up: William Hammond, Amy and Lilly Manley, Abigail and Joshua Benton, Matthew and Jessica Worden, Madison Nicholas, Sophie and Jake Mudge, and Lucy Hammond.

There was also a group of students helping out as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award.

The volunteers were lucky with the weather and managed to pick up nine bin bags of rubbish in total.

Suzanne and Laura both expressed their thanks to the volunteers, |whilst Laura explained the importance of beach cleans, especially in |the winter months when a lot of rubbish is washed on to the beaches from the sea.
