The preferred design for the Perranporth Bolingey Stream flood risk management scheme will see steps taken to cut flooding risk in the seaside resort.

The option chosen for the scheme will now move forward to the detailed design and construction phase.

The design includes:

• An earth embankment along the left bank of the Bolingey Stream over a length of 900m between New Road Bridge and St Pirans Road.

• A new slipway into the Bolingey Stream on the left bank immediately upstream of Ponsmere Bridge.

• A replacement footbridge over the Bolingey Stream downstream of Nansmellyn Nature Reserve.

• Flap valves to 11 existing drainage pipes on the left bank of the channel at Perran Beach.

• A floodgate at the pedestrian footbridge over the Bolingey Stream.

• Localised environmental enhancements of the channel.

The proposed development is now being subject to a competitive ‘design and build’ tendering process. The EA will work with the chosen supplier to deliver a flood risk management solution that integrates engineering and environmental requirements.

Sarah Newton MP said: "I am delighted that the funding has been secured for this important work to be undertaken. This is one project amongst many that I have worked with local parish councillors, the EA, SWW and harbour authorities to secure.

"Having seen firsthand the devastating impact of flooding in Perranporth, I am determined to work with partners to prevent flooding of homes and businesses."
