Three generations of families have enjoyed the challenges thrown down at BF Adventure’s outdoor activity centre at Halvasso over the last quarter of a century, but the charity needs continued support if it is to continue to thrive.

Chief executive, Adrian Richards, was at a meeting of Falmouth Town Council’s finance and general purposes committee last week when councillors discussed his application for a grant of £1,200 which will go towards the cost of new tents.

In his application, Mr Richards said: “We aim to expand the number and variety of opportunities available by providing a learning and residential environment which is comfortable and attractive to participants, even in poor weather.

“As we replace our old, worn-out canvas we are buying new bell tents which can accommodate more participants and those who support them. Over a year we estimate that 300 people can benefit from the use of each pair of tents.”

Speaking in support of the application, Councillor Grenville Chappel, said: “Lots and lots of the youth from the estate (Penwerris) have used BF Adventure and thought the world of it. They love going there and I would support it through and through.”

In response, Mr Richards said “As a charity, we have now been here for 25 years and there have been the third generation of local individuals we have supported. We have lost a lot of statutory funding so the grant is going to make a huge difference as we, as an organisation, have to stand on our own two feet.

“We are trying to raise awareness. We need to do a lot more to bring in the whole community if the site is still going to be here in 25 years. We have definitely got a future, but without support we are going to struggle.”

The council’s committee unanimously agreed to approve the application for the £1,200 grant. A second application for a further £1,200 has been made to the Cornwall 100 Club through the Cornwall Community Foundation.
