A retrial of a 21-year-old Falmouth man accused of murdering a pensioner in an old west Cornwall mine works is to take place, the Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed.

A jury failed to reach a verdict on the murder charge against Trewin Kevern , of Godolphin Road, when he went on trial at Truro Crown Court.

His co-defendant, 34-year-old Kevin Cooper, of Carharrack, was jailed for life in May for murdering 72-year-old retired driving instructor David Alderson.

Mr Alderson’s body had been found face down in a pond at the Wheal Maid mine works. He had been beaten before he was dumped in the water.

Keys to the victim’s home at Old Hill in Falmouth were taken and Cooper stole his £40,000 life savings from his safe in the property.

Cooper was told he will serve 28 years behind bars, but the jury failed to reach a verdict on Mr Kevern. The CPS has now said it will seek a retrial at a future date.
