St Stythians Male Voice Choir held its presentation night recently when over 60 choristers, partners and friends were greeted on arrival by Garnet Martin, choir chairman, and the music team, Ken and Kathryn Downing.

After a brief introduction, welcoming people and during which he stressed the need for new members, Garnet made the first presentation to Clive Sara (The Champ) who had achieved a 100 per cent attendance record and so won the David Dower Memorial Cup. Long service certificates were then presented to Ken Trengove and Howard Jones (Chris Smith was unable to attend) for ten years service. Howard Jones was also made a life member of the choir in recognition of his outstanding efforts with particular regard to fund raising.

Bob Willmott achieved certificates from both the choir and the Cornish Federation of Male Voice Choirs for an incredible 45 years service. Garnet then gave Sara Munns, representing the Cornwall Music Service Trust, the choir’s chosen charity for last year, a cheque for £250. Sara explained the work of the trust and how it helps the development of young musicians; 90 staff, delivering over 1,000 hours per week from Land’s End to Plymouth. Future developments include an orchestra for disabled young people as well as support for young people from deprived areas.

Garnet then asked Ken Downing, MD, to say a few words. Ken thanked the ladies and the ladies' committee for their continued support. He reported on the success achieved by the choir at the Camborne Music Festival and hoped that the Cornwall Music Festival at Truro on March 18 would be equally rewarding. Ken mentioned the choir’s engagements throughout the coming year: three visits to Princess Pavilion, Trebah Garden and Crantock Village Hall. For him, however, the highlight would be singing at the Stithians Show concert (July 11) as it marks 30 years, to the day, since he became conductor of the choir. Ken remarked about the “spirit" within the choir but how new members are always most welcome. Finally, Ken alluded to the choir’s 70th anniversary next year when among many other activities the choir would be making a new CD.

Jackie Dunstan then spoke, on behalf of the ladies' committee, pledging its continued support and informed the “party” that the raffle had raised £85 for choir funds. Finally, Garnet thanked the staff at the Inn for All Seasons for their excellent service and food. So ended another successful social for the choir.
