A man from Pool has received an 18 month conditional discharge after he admitted being responsible for a council tax support fraud totalling £1,385.89.

Christopher James Ward, aged 24, of Brunton Road, pleaded guilty at Truro Magistrates Court on Wednesday to two counts of council tax support fraud.

It was established that Ward was in paid employment and had failed to report this fact to Cornwall Council which resulted in him receiving more council tax support than that to which he was entitled.

As well as the 18 month conditional discharge, Ward was also ordered to pay the full council costs of £887.80 for their time in investigating the case and bringing the matter before the courts. In addition, he was also ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £15. The overpaid council tax support is being repaid by Ward.

Cornwall Council operates a "zero tolerance" policy to fraud and corruption. If you suspect fraud is occurring call its confidential fraud hotline on freephone 0800 7316125.
