The thick defensive walls of Pendennis Castle were no match for Falmouth and District Cub Scouts when they spent the day celebrating 100 years of Cub Scouting with a range of fun activities.

The youngsters explored every inch of the site and learnt about life in the castle. The Cubs from all seven Cub Packs in Falmouth, Mylor and the Helford, also enjoyed a birthday cake kindly donated by Mawnan cake designer Jacky Law, of sugarmagic.co.uk.

Throughout 2016, the Scout Association and Falmouth and District Cubs are celebrating a century since Lord Baden-Powell created the Cub Scout section for those too young to join the Boy Scouts, to ensure that the adventure of Scouting was available to more and more young people. Today Cub Scouts are among the 500,000 youngsters taking part in Scouting across the UK.

Cub Scouts are aged between eight and ten-and--a-half and they take part in a wide range of activities designed to be interesting and challenging. During this year, the young people of Falmouth and District Cubs have been involved in an adventure packed programme including attending the County Cub Centenary Camp at Stithians, which saw Cubs from across Cornwall taking part in an adventurous four-day camp including days at BF Adventure and on the water at Stithians Lake.

Lewis, a Cub from Falmouth, said: “The Cub’s 100th birthday year is so much fun and I’ve tried lots of new stuff like rafting and abseiling. I loved the birthday cake today.”

Adult volunteer Christian added: “It’s a lot of fun being a Scouting volunteer, seeing Cubs from different packs having fun together around the castle is great. I know the youngsters get a lot out of being a member and so do the adults”

Scouting in Falmouth seeks to transform the lives of young people by providing an inspiring programme of everyday adventure. Over 200 activities, including adventure camps, climbing and watersports, are on offer.

Scouting is shaped by young people in partnership with adults and is always looking for new volunteers - if you fancy a go why not join the adventure at falmouthscouts.org.uk.
