Falmouth's petrolheads were getting revved up at the fire station recently for the fifth annual Falmouth Urban Speed Event.

Modified car fans were able to show off their motors at the station, and to parade them through the town, as well as learning more about the dangers of speeding and other road safety risks.

Martin Gallaway of Falmouth Fire Station's white watch, one of the organisers, said: "The watch at Falmouth have been organising this show for a number of years now and the support we get from the local modified community is really good.

"Truro and district motor club brought us down some stage rally cars, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service came down to the fire station, Ocean BMW also brought a car for us to show, we also had an I8 and a Corvette.

"We encourage modified car drivers into the station giving them the chance to show their modified cars and win a prize in the show and shine, at the same time we can educate the drivers on road safety, and how illegal modifications can be dangerous."

The event is aimed primarily at 16 to 24 year-old motorists, and over the years the crew have tailored their approach to their audience, featuring a drink and drive demonstration and showing what it feels like to be a casualty being cut from a vehicle. But alongside the education there is also a fun side.

Martin added: "We had a procession of cars in a convoy through Falmouth on the way to the station, the show started at 12 o’clock and was a real success. We had some really impressive cars and some really nice people with a passion for modified vehicles.

"We have a partnership with Mill Autos and they help us spread the word, they help us out with discounted prizes to give away on the day. We also had their racing simulator, which made a good bit of money for charity."
