A group of 58 young people from Helston, Falmouth, Penryn and Mullion secondary schools have spent the summer building their own confidence and building better communities with a local charity.

BF Adventure, based near Penryn, has helped the children through the government backed National Citizen Service (NCS) scheme, as they met new people, built confidence, challenged themselves, learned new skills and completed a 30 hour social action project.

Once graduated from the programme the young people will have a killer CV, experiences they would not otherwise have had and the confidence to reach their maximum potential as they begin their journey into post-16 education or employment.

As part of their course the final cohort of students was visited by Falmouth MP Sarah Newton, who discussed their with them ahead of their social action project.

So far this summer BF Adventure NCS groups have raised more than £1,000 for their chosen charities, and this group will be attending a car boot sale in Falmouth, cake baking, building a sheltered area at BF Adventure using a disused canoe and donated items and tidying up the sensory garden.

The group has also organised a Pokemon Go lure party in Falmouth on August 25 from 6pm to 9pm to raise awareness and funds for their chosen charity.

Mrs Newton said: “It was wonderful to meet the NCS students at BF Adventure, they were full of great ideas for their social action project and had some wonderful fundraising plans. The group had excellent resilience, a brilliant bond and exclaimed on the fantastic experience NCS has been. I loved the high quality reflection work. What a wonderful group of young people.”

Some of the charities the NCS students have chosen to support this year include Surfers Against Sewage, Carly Taylor Fighting Back, Finns Army, Penhaligons Friends and the final group will be supporting BF Adventure's new programme Head Out, a programme to support mental wellbeing in young people in Cornwall.

The final stage of the programme is a graduation event at Hall for Cornwall on September 28. Over 300 Cornish young people will be attending the event with their families and will receive a signed certificate from the current Prime Minister Teresa May.
