Coverack School and Coverack Space 2000 now have two new silk flags to share thanks to sponsorship from the Bay Hotel.

A number of years ago textiles artist Sharon Verry worked with local children to produce two silk flags depicting Coverack village, but over time these flags faded and needed replacing. Responding to a request in the Coverack’s What’s On guide the Bay Hotel offered to sponsor this activity.

Coverack School pupils worked with CS2000 and then with Sharon to produce two new stunning silk flags. In workshops the youngsters worked from preliminary sketches they had done around the village which included fishing boats, paddle boarders, seagulls and ice creams.

They each chose one sketch from which to make their own, individual flag. The sketch was enlarged, covered first with cling film and then with a piece of silk fabric. The children then used a special wax tool to out-line the sketch on to the silk. When the wax had dried, the children added drops of coloured dye with a paintbrush which spread up to the wax edges.

In the afternoon, the children repeated the process using all of their sketches on to two large pieces of silk which are now a "beautiful combination of colours and images."

The flags will be used by Coverack School in term time and by CS2000 during the holidays.

"The children worked very hard, had fun and learnt new skills," said Caroline Beadle, CS2000 events coordinator. "For a local business to support the school and community in this way is wonderful and we would really like to get our thanks publicly known."
