A charity organisation set up by three men from Cornwall is teaching school children across the Duchy how to prepare and cook pasties for their families.

The Pasty Box is a charity set up by co-founders Lewis Groom, Fergus Muller (known to most as Ferg) and Adam Anderson.

The charity process started a year ago, after being inspired by Manchester United football player Marcus Rashford’s campaign to offer free school meal vouchers to 1.3 million eligible children across the UK during the Covid-19 pandemic.

After the Government pulled the plug on the free half-term school dinners, Ferg, owner of Ann’s Pasties at The Lizard, Helston and Porthleven, decided to do his bit to help families across the Duchy.

He said: “We offered families to come in without saying anything - if they needed to feed their family they could come in and grab some pasties.

“Quite a lot of families came in; it wasn’t until then I realised how poor our county actually is. After speaking with Lewis and Adam, something needed to be done.”

School teachers Lewis and Adam explained that some children rely on their free school meal as it’s the only full meal they will have in a day.

With these realisations in mind, the co-founders went forward with the idea to teach children before half term how to prepare and cook pasties and deliver a box with high-quality and locally sourced ingredients to the child so they can prepare meals for their families.

The first attempt at teaching school children how to make a perfect pasty was said to be "incredible" by Lewis, with the session receiving lots of positive feedback.

“We had some amazing crimpers and some of them who struggled to peel and chop are now at home making meals with their families, it’s just fantastic,” he said.

Adam added: “The skills the children learn with us they can take with them through life, they can adapt what they learn and hopefully teach these skills to others.”
