CORNWALL gig rowers enjoyed a successful weekend's rowing at the World Pilot Gig Championships on the Isles of Scilly, with a number of Duchy-based clubs securing their place as champions.
Coming in first place as Women's World Champions were Helford A in Morgawr. Fowey placed second in Q with Caradon in An Dhowrlann finishing in third place. Fourth was filled by Falmouth in Arwenack and fifth place was taken by Coverack in Morah.
The Men’s World Pilot Gig Championships Final saw Looe A in Currah’s Pride become World Champions, with second place taken by Coverack in Morah. Third place was taken by Falmouth in Black Rock. Fourth place was St Mary’s in Zelda and fifth place was taken by Helford in Morgawr.
The Men's Vets was won by Caradon in Ann Glanville, with Mounts Bay in Ictis coming second, Charlestown in Spriggan coming third, Helford in Morgawr took fourth, and Roseland in Polvarth taking fifth.
In the Men's Super Vets, Caradon in Ann Dhowrlann took first place, with Falmouth in Black Rock in Second, Salcombe in Bolt coming third, Dart in Lightning coming in Fourth and Muiden in Amuda taking fifth.
In the Super Vets Ladies, Mounts Bay in Ictis took first place, with Helford in Morgawr coming second, Dart in Lightning taking third, Caradon in Ann Dhowrlann placing fourth, and Ilfracombe in rapparee taking fifth place.
The Vets Ladies saw St Mary’s in Zelda finishing first, with Newquat in Spy taking second, Charlestown in Spriggan came third, Porthleven in Energetic placing fourth, and Teign in Morgan taking fifth.
Speaking after the event, the World Pilot Gig Championships said: “As the dust settles on this weekend, we’d like to thank you all for your support and patience throughout the weekend.
"There have been highs and lows and some pretty thick fog - but we got there. Congratulations to all the group winners and World Champions.
"We hope you have a super season of racing on the Mainland and we’ll see you soon."
A spokesperson for Falmouth Gig Club said: "We came away as one of the most successful clubs on the circuit with our Mens Super Vets taking Silver in their category.
"Our Mens A taking bronze, our B crew also making the final coming away in 10th.
"Our Ladies A & B both making their finals coming away in 4th & 7th.
"The Men in particular have a great resurrection, with it having been five of those in the squad's first-ever Championships, having only started rowing 11 months ago!
Bev Clark, secretary of Coverack Gig Club, said: "As a small club we're incredibly proud of all our members who raced this weekend.
"We'd also like to say thank you to the local community for their continued support and congratulate all our crews, as their dedication and hard work has paid off, producing excellent results."
