A cycling club in Falmouth has donated £900 to two local charities.

Falmouth Wheelers Cycling Club has split the money equally between Pendennis Leisure CIC and St Petrocs.

The presentation of funds took place during the club's annual general meeting.

The funds were raised over the past year through various club events, and the charities have been selected via member votes.

Retiring treasurer Phil Samuel presented the donations to Chris Lee, trustee of Pendennis Leisure CIC, and Dr James Oliver, a trustee of St Petrocs.

Dr Oliver shed light on the recent activities of St Petrocs, a charity devoted to addressing homelessness in Cornwall.

The organisation, currently strained under the cost of living crisis and a shortage of affordable homes, had its services involved with 198 homeless individuals in January.

Of these, 137 slept outdoors, but 67 people were successfully secured accommodations.

He assured club members that their donation would be put to good use, especially during the cold months when homelessness spikes.

Chris Lee shared Pendennis Leisure CIC's journey since its creation after the Ships and Castles Leisure Pool's closure.

This led to concerns regarding the headland's sale for development.

But, after much negotiation, the Falmouth Town Council managed to secure the transfer of the Ships and Castles building from Cornwall Council.

The structure, now leased to Pendennis Leisure, was reopened as Pendennis Community Centre last year.

The hub, run entirely by volunteers, offers gym sessions, a cafe, acts as the base for several local groups, and has plans to install a 50m swimming pool.
