In celebration of Flora Day 2024, a unique, limited-edition cup has finally arrived in Helston this week.

The Flora Day-themed cup is now available to buy from shops and businesses in Helston for just £1.

Plastic Free Helston shared revealed that the cups would be available to buy before May 8 with Flora Day fans and Helston residents eager to get their hands on one.

Despite Plastic Free Helston’s desire to cut out plastic waste, the cups have been made using plastic, but are dishwasher-safe and shatter-resistant.

A Plastic Free Helston spokesperson said: “Yes, the cups are made out of plastic.

“As Plastic Free Helston, if we could wave a (bamboo) magic wand and do away with all plastic waste, we would do that. However, at the moment, there isn’t a cost-effective alternative like bamboo, PLA plastic or seaweed available. If there was, then of course we would have used it.

“In the meantime, we are focused on reducing plastic, which means replacing the single-use plastic pint cups that are often found in our kennels after Flora Day and other events.”

Plastic Free Helston also said they hope that the cups will become a keepsake after the event and for future Flora Days and events in and around the town.

A team of volunteers and businesses in Helston have offered their ‘invaluable’ support towards the creation and design of the cups including Plastic Free Helston volunteers, Betty’s Café Helston, Fourth Element, One Blue Eye, Anthony Gilbert and Associates, and Helston Downsland Charity.
