A BMW driver has been arrested after two pedestrians were seriously injured when they were involved in a collision with a car in St Ives last night, leaving one of them fighting for their life.

The accident involving a BMW 1 series and a man and woman happened on Trelyon Avenue, St Ives at around 7.45pm on Tuesday evening.

Both pedestrians were seriously injured in the accident with one of the victim's injuries described as "life threatening". Both of them were taken to hospital where they are currently being treated for their injuries.

The driver of the BMW, a 45-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by driving without due care and attention. He's been released on police bail while the police carry out enquiries.

The road was closed for around eight hours while a forensic examination took place.

Police thanked the public for their patience while the investigation was carried out.

A statement issued by Devon and Cornwall Police said: "Police were called at around 7.45pm last night [April 30] to reports of a collision on Trelyon Avenue, St Ives.

"The incident involved a grey BMW 1 series and two pedestrians.

"Both pedestrians, a man and woman, were taken to hospital with serious injuries. One is described as life-threatening.

"The driver of the car, a 45-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by driving without due care and attention. He has been released on bail while enquiries are ongoing.

"Trelyon Avenue was closed for approximately eight hours to allow forensic collision investigators to examine the scene and for recovery of the vehicle. Thank you for your patience whilst this was done.
