The much-anticipated installation of the new town bell in Helston drew a crowd of excited onlookers this morning.

Members of the public gathered outside the guildhall to watch the new bell lifted into the Guildhall where it will be installed for Flora Day.

This new bell is replacing the old bronze bell which fell silent during the summer of 2023 after rusting ironwork caused the historic bell to shatter.

Helston Town Council has shared an update about the bell’s installation this morning. They said: “This morning, our new town bell was christened and lifted into place.

“Named 'Flora' and blessed in Kernewek by Father Paul Andrew, with the words and intention to bring health, happiness and prosperity to all who hear it ringing out across town.

“Thanks to all who have worked on this amazing project from Angela Thomas in the Town Council offices who researched, planned, ordered (and agonised!) over every step of this incredible historical moment, to Taylors Bellfounders, our grounds maintenance team and many more.”

Last month the council announced that the bell would be ready in time for Flora Day. They said at the time: “Exciting news! Our new bronze bell has been cast, tuned, and drilled ready for fitting.

“Flora Day is fast approaching so the pressure has been on to pull out all the stops trying to get the new bell installed.”

The council have been working alongside Taylor’s Bellfoundry in Loughborough – one of the last remaining specialists in the craft to create a brand new replacement bell – to be installed just in time for May 8.

However, for the bell to be installed safely, there is a current road traffic restriction in place while the crane is operating. Once the crane has finished operating, the road closure will be lifted.

The council also said that the road closure would not affect the Mayday Parade celebrations this evening.
