Penryn will be filled with tea and cakes galore in early June as the town's 800th anniversary celebrations continue and combine with the Queen's 90th birthday

Every celebration needs a birthday cake, and the next big event in the Penryn 800 programme is the Big Borough Bake Off on June 4, organised by Dave M Cake Design, Penryn Pop-Up and Visit Penryn.

Great British Bake Off finalist Glenn Cosby will be helping to find Penryn's next top baker, as well as offering tips and tricks alongside other professional bakers, and there will also be plenty of stalls organised by Penryn Pop-Up offering local produce, hand crafted goods and refreshments.

Judge Dave Mason of Dave M Cake Design said: "Everyone is invited to take part in a number of categories regardless of age or experience. It is all about having a go and enjoying baking."

Bake off categories include six identical cup cakes, six identical cookies and the 800th birthday cake, and for the under 14s there will be competitions for six cup cakes, judged on decoration, and six decorated cookies.

Judges will be Dave Mason, Glenn Cosby and Friday market baker Jenny Gluyas, and each winner will receive a handmade award by Kate Hale of Fire and Ink.

The event is on June 4 at the Temperance Hall, entry requirements can be downloaded at www.visitpenryn.com/event/big-borough-bake-off. To register email davescakes@hotmail.com before June 4.

The following day, June 5, the Temperance Hall will play host to an afternoon tea organised by the Penryn Federation for the town's older citizens' groups.

The event starts at 2.30pm, with entertainment from Mabe Ladies Choir, visitors will also be invited to join in with a sing-song as well, and there will be prizes for the best hat and for the person donning the most red, white and blue.

The whole community will be able to celebrate the following weekend as the Penryn Street Party returns to the town centre on Saturday, June 11.

The road will be closed from 2.30pm to 4.30pm to allow tables to be put out in the street, and there will be a brass band playing while people enjoy face-painting, bouncy castles, Irish dancing and another sing-song.

Mary May, of the Penryn Fair DayCommittee which is organising the Penryn 800 celebrations, said: "The jellies are being ordered, saffron cake cut, so bring a plate and a cup of best china if you have it.

"Come along and celebrate our Town’s 800th birthday and our Queen’s 90th birthday."
