BOROUGH seconds arrived at the Falmouth Recreation Ground with unwavering grit, determination, and a good mix of experience and youthful exuberance on this traditional boxing day derby, writes Gupta Singh.

Meanwhile, the Eagles 2XV filled with the spirit of Christmas and well plumped from a weeklong of festivities, welcomed their beloved flock with open wings, well plucked and ready for the oven, ready to be washed down with a spot of Reserve Port.

As both teams took to the field to partake in a minutes applause for John Sewell, who had passed away on Christmas Day. "John having been a stalwart of Falmouth Rugby and a true legend in the rugby community whose presence on the field was instrumental in the success of our club during the 70's.

Not only was John a remarkable player, but he also dedicated his knowledge and passion for the game to coaching. His guidance and mentorship have shaped the skills and character of countless players who have had the privilege of learning from him." - Stephen Lightfoot (friend, teammate and former Falmouth Coach).

As temperatures rose, both teams understood the oven settings. However, it was the Borough who would showcase their skills and determination to the fullest for starters, with excellent handling and a well structured gameplan. The game unfolding as a tale of two halves, with the Borough dominating the first half, leaving the scoreboard at 7 to 38 points in their favour. An intercepted wayward pass from Morgan epitomizing Falmouth's woes as Penryn soaked in the brining.

A stand out ingredient in the Boroughs first half performance coming from fly half Mike Creedon, who pulled the strings after a six year absence, proving that "form is temporary, class is permanent."

What's good for the goose is good for the gander, and now fueled by a deep sense of pride and loyalty to their team's badge, the Eagles 2XV refused to let the main course go to the bin and ready to scrape the leftovers with renewed determination and a fierce spirit, as they stormed back onto the field for the second half, ready to turn the table.

The presence of two of the the three kings "The Warwicker brothers' who's relentless efforts and unwavering commitment to their team, propelled Falmouth forward, "This half was different gravy" as Falmouth fought tooth and nail to make a stunning comeback. With each passing minute, their resilience and never-give-up attitude beginning to pay off, closing the gap and leaving the opposition in disbelief.

"You would have thought looking at the photos Penryn had lost the game instead of winning it handsomely" - Stephen Long Penryn

The game became a testament to the indomitable Falmouth spirit, showcasing their unwavering belief in the power of playing for something bigger than themselves, and had several try's been given by referee James Instance that were alleged to have been held up or forward passes, the scoreline would have been less flattering come the final whistle.

Although all were in total agreement that Morgan's try should be scrubbed off the card and put on the naughty list. The later getting DOD honours for his turkey dive in the corner which was not given.

As the match concluded, the players gathered for the most important part of the day, the third course.... a post-game celebration, raising their glasses in a toast to the joy of coming together during the festive season and absent friends. It was a reminder that the true beauty of Christmas lies in the connections we make and the bonds we strengthen.

The Blueflame 2XV Cup going back across the bypass until we do it all again next Christmas. Falmouth's man of the match was presented Rhys Barnes later that evening, who was a trifle confused as to whether it was for his game play or for becoming a new father in the week to his daughter Lola.

Falmouth Rugby Football Club extend their gratitude to all the players, supporters, and organisers who make this day enjoyable and wish everyone a Happy New Year.
