YOUNG footballers from across the South West came to Wendron on Sunday for the annual Sharon West Mini Soccer Tournament.

Nearly 100 sides ventured to Underlane for the competition named in memory of a founding member of the club who died in 1999 after battling cancer.

Money raised during the day will be split between Cancer Research UK and Wendron FC’s youth section.

Just over 200 matches being played on 13 pitches set up at the ground with more than 1,000 players involved in the action.

Teams from Penzance had significant success during the tournament with sides from the town winning the under 9, 10 and 12 sections.

The Penzance Predators won in the youngest age category as they defeated St Day Yellows 2-0 in the final.

In the under 10s, it took a penalty shoot-out to decide the winners, but the Penzance Asteroids came out on top over St Blazey Town.

Penzance Raiders took home the cup for the under 12s with a 1-0 victory in the final against St Agnes.

Truro City Cobras won the under 11 section with a 2-1 win over Falmouth United, whose under 13 side went onto win their tournament with a 2-0 victory against Ludgvan Lions.

Afterwards competition organiser Alan Watson said: “Each year this tournament continues to surpass the expectations of the previous year with more teams enjoying a fun packed day of football, all played in the true spirit of the game.”
