AFTER much talk about the concept, a Helston Veterans team finally made a run-out as they took on Camborne.

Saturday’s clash came after a lot of organisation by club stalwart Ross Williams and a number of former first team players were paraded at Clodgey Lane including Ivan Lawson, Ben Lambrick, Christian Johns and Matt Jilbert, who were also joined by youth coach Devere Bond, LJ Collick and Gary McStein.

It was Williams himself who scored the first points of the day when he ran a try into the corner and the first 20 minutes were a frantic affair.

Unfortunately, ex-Royal Navy prop Ewan Cowie had to go off with a back spasm for the hosts and by half time the score was 21-5 to Camborne as they scored three converted tries.

The visitors stretched their lead out after the break with another try before Lambrick bolted over from close range for Helston, with Jilbert adding the extras.

Martin Mullins went over in the final quarter for the hosts, but they could not close down the deficit any further.

After the match, club chairman Brian Hosken said: “This was a wonderful day of rugby and the atmosphere was absolutely brilliant and just showed how a rugby club should host a visiting team.”
