FALMOUTH had a decent enough opening to the 2015 Cornwall League Premier Division season, although at one stage it was looking catastrophic.

On Saturday the side's old foes Truro visited the Hine Downing Oval.

Despite being bowled out in 42.1 overs for just 119, the host’s bowling attack produced some magic balls to miraculously win the game by 19 runs.

A familiar face lined-up for the visitors in the form of Adrian Noott, who gave up the captain’s armband at Trescobeas Road last season before swapping allegiances to the city club.

His successor won the toss and elected to bat, but very soon Sean Hooper would have surely been thinking a mistake had been made.

When the home captain was forced to walk back to the pavilion after being caught by his predecessor off Tom Sharp for ten, Falmouth were spiralling out of control with the scoreboard reading 49-7.

A recovery was produced as Harry Roberts and George Popperwell put on 51 for the eighth wicket, with the latter top scoring with 42 as the home side eventually finished on 119.

From 50-2 the visitors found themselves on 61-6 as Antony Angove racked up three quick wickets.

Truro crept up to 100-7 before a swift killer blow came as the last three wickets fell for no runs. Glyn Furnival ended the innings with three for 14, Angove three for 49 and Thomas with three for eight.

THE trick could not be repeated on Monday as Falmouth lost by seven wickets at reigning league champions St Just.

Batting first, away skipper Sean Hooper held the top of the innings together with 43 before Christian Purchase weighed in with 52 and Stefan Churcher 22 as they finished on 203-9.

The strong home batting line-up chased down in style however with Neil Curnow, 76, and Gary Thomas, 68, leading the way.

A good note for Falmouth was the bowling of new recruit Jordan Thomas who took three for 37 from his eleven over allocation.

Falmouth seconds had a disappointing weekend as they also lost at St Just by six wickets after only making 92.

It was much closer at home to Stithians on Monday.

The visitors made 217-8 with Ryan Burley making 30 and Greg Stephens taking four for 42.

From 184-4, Falmouth collapsed to 207-9, with Daniel Hadley making 44.

Strangely five Stithians bowlers took a wicket each and there were four run-outs.

It was a good double winning weekend for Constantine as Charlie Campbell made 48 not out in their 206-8 at Redruth.

Joe Vanstone and Russell Weetch took three wickets as Redruth came up 18 runs short.

Then on Monday, in the derby against Mullion, Kevin Bosustow made 57 against his former side and Campbell 54 in the big total of 261-7. Graham Griffiths followed up his 45 to take four for 30 in the 90 run win.

St Gluvias’ second team had a mixed weekend, beating Stithians seconds easily before losing by eight wickets away at Penzance seconds.

Perranarworthal also had a mixed weekend, beating Goldsithney by five wickets after the newly-promoted club were all out for 90 at Tredrea.

A below par performance on Monday resulted in a four wicket home defeat to Hayle seconds.
