FALMOUTH'S bid for a top ten finish and qualification into next year's FA Cup was boosted by this scrappy victory at Bickland Park on Saturday.

At this late stage of the season boss Andrew Westgarth will not mind how the points are won and with four games left they are in ninth spot, level on 49 points with local rivals Helston.

Top scorer Glenn Squires was the match winner. With the game heading towards a goalless draw - the same result as in the reverse fixture earlier this season - he popped up with a precious goal 13 minutes from time.

Ryan Barnes, who has been outstanding in Town's goal this year, made several fine saves to keep the scoreline blank in an even contest.

After Joe Cooper had headed just wide from an Ed Timmons free kick after quarter of an hour, Barnes was called into action when he clawed the ball away from Dan Bailey's head, before diving full length to tip away a first time shot from T Burns.

Barnes then reacted quickly to deny former Town player Sam Reed just before the interval.

Midway through the second period, Squires beat his marker on the right hand side and found Westgarth eight yards out, but his shot deflected off a defender's legs and flew wide.

The introduction of Rob Wearne brought some energy to Town's attack.

Fifteen minutes from time a Timmons free kick was headed back across goal by Cooper to Tom Whipp, but his shot was high and wide.

Squires produced the telling moment of the match two minutes later. Westgarth found Dan Richardson wide on the left and he beat his man and sent over a high cross which eluded the keeper and Squires was on hand to head home from six yards out.

Town have four matches left - they were due to visit Launceston last night and have two home games against Torpoint and Tavistock on Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday. Both games kick off at 3pm.

They will finish their season with a long trip to Witheridge on Saturday, May 7.
