Falmouth Town 5, Newquay 1

FALMOUTH produced their biggest opening day victory of the season for almost 30 years after a second half goal feast at Bickland Park on Saturday.

Rob Wearne notched his first hat-trick for the club as Town ran riot against a new-look Newquay side, managed by former Godolphin boss Tony McKellar.

After a goalless first half in which Town had the best of what few chances were on offer, the onslaught began three minutes into the second period when Wearne found Mike Vanes who shot home inside the penalty area.

The hosts doubled their lead just after the hour mark when Wearne’s shot was deflected past former Town keeper Dan Peters.

With 20 minutes to go the match was over as a contest when a splendid byline cross from Ed Timmons was smashed home by Wearne at the back post.

Town were in top gear now and ten minutes later they made it 4-0 when substitute Olly Walker’s cross-cum-shot was tipped on to the crossbar by Peters and Vanes was on hand to head home the rebound.

Newquay’s first effort on goal from Hayden Turner was saved by Barnes but with four minutes to go Jack Rapsey, son of former Town marksman Mark, slid the ball under Barnes for a consolation.

There was still time for Wearne to complete his first treble for the club however, when he popped up at the far post to cap a memorable day for both him and his team.
