THE clash between Eagles 2XV and Launceston II in the Duchy Shield semi-final can be described as a battle in the rain, with wet and muddy conditions reminiscent of a boggy field, writes Gupta Singh.

However, there were moments of energy and sun that provided rays of hope throughout the match.

The game kicked off with the Eagles seconds displaying great enthusiasm and energy. James Instance, acting as the playmaker, orchestrated the team's movements like an old silkworm, while captain Tug Wilson at centre skilfully weaved through the opposition's defence.

It was Instance who initiated a breath-taking off-the-ground diving pass to set up the backs and Ali Harding, who showcased his speed and agility by sprinting forty meters to score the opening try out wide within the first two minutes. Unfortunately, the conversion was missed.

For the next twenty minutes, the game remained stuck in the middle of the field, with Launceston struggling to break through Falmouth's solid defensive line. Jack Blackeston, who consistently displayed tenacity and determination, was a standout performer, earning himself the title of man of the match for his resolute defence and gritty attacking play.

However, Launceston found their breakthrough by strategically kicking the ball and exploiting the Eagles' errors. Falmouth's decision to run the ball back in the wet conditions proved unwise as they fumbled and Launceston seized the opportunity, scoring under the posts. The conversion was successful, giving the visitors a 7-5 lead.

For the remainder of the game, both teams maintained their defensive lines, resulting in a stalemate where neither side seemed capable of adding to the score. Falmouth came closest to scoring in the final third when they pushed deep into the corner through their pack, but the referee Steve Bartlett ruled that Cam Hopkins was held up on the line.

In the 79th minute, Launceston found a burst of energy and created a three-on-one opportunity, scoring out wide on the left. The conversion was once again successful, leaving the final score at 14-5 in favour of Launceston.

Looking ahead, the Eagles 2XV will be seeking redemption when they face Redruth Albany at home in the league next week at the Falmouth Recreation Ground, with kick-off scheduled for 14:30.
